Kittens and puppies are generally born with a worm infestation. It is not always easy to detect worms in your pet, however, in the case of severe infection; the following symptoms may be present:
- Diarrhoea and/or vomiting
- Pot-belly
- Weight loss (despite a good appetite)
- Irritation around the bottom (pet scoots on his bottom)
- White segments in the faeces or around the anus
- Dull or pale coat
How often should I worm my pet?
Puppies & kittens – initial treatment at 2 weeks, repeat every 2 weeks until 12 weeks of age. Repeat monthly until 6 months old, then start on an adult schedule of every 3 months for life.
- Breeding bitches – treat during the pregnancy. Then one week before whelping. Repeat 3 to 4 weeks after the birth.
- Breeding queens – treat at mating and again just before kittening. Repeat 3-4 weeks after the birth.
- Adult dogs & cats – Treat every 3 months.
- Newly acquired adult pets – Worm on arrival and repeat 2 weeks later. Continue with a single dose every 3 months.
Regular worming of pets along with good hygiene will also protect the human family members, especially children from worm infections.
